  • Research Group Interests:
  •  The Applied Computational Intelligence (ACI) research group has a focus on the following areas:
    -    Computational Optimization: Many real-life scientific and engineering problems can be modelled as search or optimization problems. A primary focus will be on the development and application of heuristic search and optimization methods, including evolutionary algorithms (e.g. genetic algorithms), guided local search, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization and hybrid methodologies known as Memetic algorithms.
    -    Machine Learning: Another primary focus will be on the development and application of machine learning techniques to better understand data and discover knowledge on various areas within and outside of computer science.
The current main topics of interest of ACI are:
    -    Heuristics and Metaheuristics.
    -    Biologically inspired computing, e.g. genetic algorithm.
    -    Combinatorial Optimization
    -    Constraint Programming
    -    Machine Learning
    -    Distributed or Parallel Algorithms.
    -    Applications: routing, scheduling, planning, speech recognition, forecasting, etc.
  •
  • Research Group Activities/Projects:
  •  •    The current research of the members of the ACI group include:
    -    The Application of metaheuristics (e.g. guided local search and genetic algorithms) to various problems including routing scheduling and allocation problems.
    -    The development of parallel and distributed metaheuristics.
    -    Multi-objective optimizations.
    -    Planning in dynamic environment.
    -    Constraint programming and logic models : CSP, MaxCSP, SAT, MaxSAT, Weighted SAT. (University project on MaxSAT)
    •    The members of the group have been supervising many Master students in topics related to the scope of the group.
