Courses descriptions

Core courses:

IM 6111- Information Governance (IG) is the infrastructure of policy, structures and systems used to direct, manage and monitor the way in which organizations process and handle information. This course provides students with advanced understating of the issues related to manage information at organizational level by addressing the framework of information governance including compliance, standards, best practice, responsibilities and control, legal and ethical issues, as well as risk, environmental and operational requirements. Students will be able to apply the Information Governance practice in different context and areas such as health, legal, educational, finance and other sectors.
IM 6112 - Research Methods: the students will learn the following:
Become aware of the ongoing research in Information Management.
Gain critical and practical understanding of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the research utilized in data collection and analysis.
Awareness of ethical and access issues to information management.
Identify the problem area and to introduction to methods of data collection and analysis when conducting an empirical research at a public or government sector.
IM 6221 - User Experience Design: Information architecture and design determines how information is designed, organized and labeled, and it specifies the navigation structure that makes it possible for users to find information. It consists of two core concepts of Information Architecture (IA) and User Experience Design (UXD). IA deals with structuring a website’s and innovative technology content through the creation of consistent user-centered design their information based on interaction design principles. UXD consists of information architecture, interaction design, and user research.
IM 6271 - Foundation of Data Science is the study of the extraction of knowledge from data. It brings together computational and statistical skills for data-driven problem solving. The goal of this course is to provide a principled understanding of the computational and statistical underpinnings of current and emerging methods along with learning concepts, techniques and tools to deal with various facets of data science practice, including data collection and integration, exploratory data analysis, predictive modeling, descriptive modeling, data product creation, evaluation.
IM 6322 - Advanced Information Retrieval Systems: This course designs to provide students with advanced techniques and practices of information retrieval. The emphasis is on understanding how to successfully search for information through all types of information resources. The course outlines how such information resources are structured and how to interrogate the associated search interfaces to improve results.
IM 6423 - Data Visualization: This course focuses on the use of visualization techniques and tools to understand and analyze data. Learn basic visualization design and evaluation principles, and learn how to acquire, parse, and analyze large datasets. Understand practical experience with the visualization of complex data, including multivariate data, geospatial data, textual data, time series data and network data.
IM6431 - Competitive Intelligence: This course applied competitive intelligence will focus on the basic principles, techniques and methods of competitive analysis, the types of competitive analysis systems and their applications, traditional and new sources of information about competitors and industries, the nature of business information and its lifecycle, the ethical issues of competitive analysis and the application of competitive intelligence to real-world scenarios.
IM 6591 - Research Study: This research study course is a pre-requisite for registering the master thesis. Initially, students are associated with potential supervisors based on research interests. Then, students are guided by those supervisors towards writing a complete master thesis proposal. This course is conducted as weekly lectures and meetings in which students and supervisors discuss research topics with the aim to write a complete thesis proposal.

IM 6613 - Digital Rights: This course provides students an Introduction to “Digital Rights” present the concepts and demonstrate an understanding of digital rights practices. This course equips students with the need of security, privacy and ethical behavior within a digital environment. it provides them with the knowledge, methods, and techniques to effectively engage in information and communication technologies.
IM 6624 - Digital Information & Archive Management: The course covers the purpose, strategies, tools and standards used to digitize information and its subsequent management. It explores issues relating to digitization, archives and records management, and in particular those concerning the planning, creation, organization and management of digitized collections. It also covers archival management of electronic records to ensure they can be preserved and made accessible for the future.
IM6625 - Data Warehousing and Data Centers: This course covers the concepts and techniques in the design and construction of high-performance data warehouses. The software, hardware and design factors influencing performance characteristics of the data warehouse will be emphasized. A special focus will be given to features and functions in RDBMS implementations that are appropriate in a data warehouse environment. Distinction between DSS (Decision Support System) and OLTP workloads will be made with an emphasis on performance characteristics and functionality required.
IM6632 - Consulting Practice: This course provides an in-depth understanding of consulting practices and its applications in information management settings including consulting concepts, approaches and methodologies to consultative analysis and problem solving. This course focuses on the roles, responsibilities, and processes of IM consultants in the IT consulting industry. The purpose is to provide vital information and guidance steps for starting, developing, and marketing a successful consulting practice. Some topics that the course might cover are: IM consulting industry, consultant quality, consultant skills, client relationship management, consultant roles & responsibilities, consulting process, tools (problem-solving, project management, team interaction).
IM 6672 - Text Analytics and Mining: The course focuses on the major applied theories and techniques for mining and analyzing text to support organizational development and decision making. Understand different text mining processing such as clustering, classification, and trend detection. Learn how to uncover previously unknown, valid text-mined patterns to develop predictive text models. Understand the process of exploring contextual data that concealed in text collections from all type of sources such as social media, information systems, the web, books, Journals, archives files, and other text sources of natural language text.
IM6673 - Big Data: In this course we explore key data analysis and management techniques, which applied to massive datasets are the cornerstone that enables real-time decision making in distributed environments, business intelligence in the Web, and scientific discovery at large scale. In particular, we examine the map-reduce parallel computing paradigm and associated technologies such as distributed file systems, Hadoop Ecosystem.
IM6681 - Selected Topics in Information Management: The course will utilize the following to demonstrate the core requirements:

Contemporary approaches and methods in the field of development and application of information management.
Advanced techniques of the application of contemporary information knowledge management.
Examples of practical applications.
Independent study and research work in the field of information management systems.

Master Programs.

The Graduate Program of Computer Science offers two plans for the M.Sc. degree in computer science, that is research and project perspective plans. The Master's program ensures that students will have a broad and solid background in computer science as a discipline. The program seeks to provide the necessary theoretical background for those wishing to pursue their PhD degree. Also, it provides the necessary practical background for those wishing to progress in their careers and raise their professional level.

Research perspective Plan: requires successful completion of a thesis in order to pursue the PhD studies.

Project perspective Plan: requires successful completion of a graduation project to provide graduate students with skills and deeper knowledge in a particular specialty of their choice.

The program is designed to meet the following requirements:

Serve a wide variety of students with diverse backgrounds.
Provide students a solid foundation of the computer science discipline (Breadth perspective).
Ensure that students have studied a particular area of specialty in detail (Depth Knowledge).
Provide the necessary theoretical background to those wishing to pursue their PhD, as well as the necessary practical background to those wishing to advance their industry career (thesis/project perspective).

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the Master:
In addition to the conditions set forth in the Regulations for Graduate Studies, College requires:

Proceeding from the development of the College of Computer and Information Sciences and great appreciation for the importance of information technology in the development and support of educational institutions, it was decided to establish the Information Technology Department. It utilizes the technical developments in the educational operations of Al Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University according to the latest developments and updates that are on the field.

In 12/5/2013, the approval of Council of Higher Education was issued (No. 1434/73/17) which was sealed by the approval of the Royal Decree (No.35346, dated 30/7/2013) to set up the forth department, named Information Technology Department.

IT department undertook new tasks that ensure that the computing infrastructure is suitable for any organization to operate efficiently and reliability, and meet the computer-related needs of individuals, and developing appropriate solutions for problems. Today, all kinds of organizations dramatically rely on IT departments. They need to have appropriate regulations, and it is working properly, and to be locked and are constantly updated and maintained in a timely manner.

The department of IT offers one undergraduate degree programs for the students. It has a team of highly qualified and professional faculty members with impressive academic and industrial credentials. The faculty members are committed to provide excellent teaching and personal advisory services to the students.

On behalf of my colleagues in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences at the Al Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU), I welcome you and I hope that you will find these pages useful concerning general information about the department, its objectives, its educational philosophy and its research activities.

It is an honour to all the faculty members of the department to provide all the means to offer bachelor and master degrees in the Department of Computer Science.

The educational programs are designed to comply with the requirements of professional organizations in the field of computer science such as ACM and IEEE. The department objectives are achieved through a continuous improvement process that is based on the latest quality measures. The department graduate, with all the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills, will be able to compete and have a lead in the labor market as well as in the relevant academic fields.

The department strives to rapidly achieve its goals through the continuous evaluation and improvement processes. Our educational philosophy depends on the diversity of teaching and learning methods. We believe that problem solving and teamwork projects in addition to practical hands-on training should be used in addition to traditional methods of teaching. The department also encourages self-learning and the use of modern technologies.

The department focuses on research projects for faculty members in the department in order to make the department a stimulating environment for the learner as well as the teacher to achieve the mission and the vision of the department. The department seeks to be one of the research centers of excellence in the area of computer science. This could be obtained by attracting outstanding research scientists with high quality publications.

The department focuses on the following research areas: Computing to serve Legitimacy and the Arabic Language, Software Engineering, Databases and Data Mining, Information Security, Computer Networks and Mobile Networks, High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. In addition, the department funds scholarships to teaching assistants and lecturers to well-known international universities.

The department also seeks to establish partnerships with domestic and international scientific research centers in collaboration with the research the unit in the university to improve scientific research in the department.

Finally, I have to admit that the role of the department could not be achieved without the help of Allah Almighty, then the support and the encouragement of the scientific committees at Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. The Department of Information Management (IM) in the College of Computer and Information Sciences is one of the leading academic departments at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. IM is taking a comprehensive approach to modernize the information field both conceptually and practically, and is continuously developing its academic program to meet the current and future trends in the information work as well as the evolutionary improvements in technology. The department offers Bachelor and Master degrees in Information Management.

The courses are visualized to enable students developing skills in information Management and technology, and at the same time make them able to understand the professional expertise while they occupy decision making positions. Welcome to the department of Information Systems in the College of Computer and Information Sciences at Imam Muhammad Bin Saud Islamic University. In today’s fast-paced business environment, organizations and businesses challenge in structuring their business processes and operations to meet vibrant global competition. Nowadays, goods and services are increasingly managed and supplied by world-wide networks of firms, utilizing modern information technology to share information and coordinate activities. In this information-centric environment, organizations cannot gain competitive advantages just by amassing physical capital: they must make investments in systems and technologies to maximize the value of their information assets. Organizations that do not possess these capabilities will fall behind in the highly-competitive and quickly-changing business environment.

The establishment of the department of Information Systems meets the needs of the growing community of computer technologies, and to participate effectively in the development plans in our country. It was established in 1997/1998 under the Faculty of Social Sciences. Due to the increase in number of students, it was transferred along with the department of Computer Science into a newly established College of Computer and Information Sciences in 2001/2002. The department grew rapidly since then and became the largest department in the university in terms of the number of accommodated undergraduate students and the largest Information Systems department in the country.

The department of Information Systems has a team of highly qualified and professional faculty members with impressive academic and industrial credentials. The faculty members are committed to provide excellent teaching and personal advisory services to the students. In addition, they are making significant contributions to the professional and research communities with high-quality consultation and research works.

In light of the technological development witnessed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the need for qualified national graduates in the field of information systems, the Information Systems Department was established in the year 1419 H at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. This department has rapidly developed to become one of the Prestigious departments that attract many male and female students. The Department of Information Systems includes a group of scientifically qualified faculty members from among the world's best universities, and they also have academic, research, and practical experiences that qualify them to provide distinguished education. The department awards Bachelor and Master degrees in information systems. The Bachelor program has been accredited internationally by the ABET organization and locally by the National Center for Academic Accreditation and Assessment, to become one of the first accredited programs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The department offers many specialized courses at the bachelor's and master's levels, such as data mining, information, and cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, and many more.

What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is a group of scientific disciplines related with the design and development of computer systems hardware and software. It includes the logical perception of computing and its applications. Computer Science has many disciplines, including programming, software engineering, database management systems, design and maintenance of networks, artificial intelligence, the development of programming languages, compilers, information security, operating systems and others.

The Computer Science is a relatively new science compared to other applied sciences and has awarded the first B.Sc. degree in 1962. It is witnessing a very rapid growth both in demand for people with such specialization and in the development of curricula and its specific divisions.

Computer Science is one of the disciplines most necessary in almost all fields of science such as medicine, social sciences, engineering and others. Computer science applications range from the diagnosis of health problems and illness based on intelligent systems, advanced communication systems and mechanisms based on natural language processing techniques, analysis and synthesis of data at various types even including sound, video and images.
