Quantum dot emitters in planar photonic crystal nanocavities

Abstract:

In this talk I will discuss the design, fabrication, and characterization of GaAs photoniccrystal nanocavities with embedded InGaAs quantum dots. Cavities with differentgeometries are investigated, including H1, H2, L3 and L5. The main focus is onH2 type, consisting of a defect formed by omitting seven air holes in the center of atriangular lattice. The design and simulation of the cavities are performed by using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method. It is found that by engineering theair holes surrounding the cavity, the quality factor can be increased significantly by the gentle mode confinement method.

The quantum dot samples are grown by using molecular beam epitaxy technique. Then, the photonic crystals are produced by using electron beam lithographyand etching techniques. The fabrication process is developed and optimizedin order to obtain high quality GaAs photonic crystal membranes.

The cavities are characterized by using photoluminescence technique at lowtemperature. Polarization-dependent measurements are also performed in order toidentify the cavity modes. The results are in good agreement with our theoreticalcalculations.

Dr. Mohannad Al-Hmoud is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. He received the BSc degree in Applied Physics from Jordan University of Science and Technology, Jordan, in 2003. He completed the MSc degree in Physics from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 2007. In his master thesis work, he developed and fabricated microwave microstructures, which have been used for nanoscale imaging magnetometry with diamondspins under ambient conditions. In 2013, he received the PhD degree in Physics from the University of Paderborn, Germany. His PhD work includes design, fabrication, and characterization of GaAs photonic crystal cavities with embedded InGaAs quantum dots.
