In the sixth scientific visit: Physics female students visit SABIC Plastic Applications Development Center (SPADC)

The Department of Physics has paid the sixth scientific visit to SABIC Plastic Applications Development Center (SPADC). (SPADC) is the biggest center in the Middle East and ranks among the world's third largest petrochemicals manufacturers. The visit took place on Thursday 8 Dec 2016 under the supervision of Dr. Mervat Alzumay', the vice head of the department; and Ms. Tarfah Al-'Inad, the activity supervisor and a faculty member at the department; and a group of a students. The delegation was welcomed by his Excellency Eng. Abdulmalek Al-Sulaimi.

A welcoming statement was made by Eng. Abdulmalik, and then a presentation was delivered about lab safety rules especially in cases of fire. A number of varied issues were covered throughout the visit to (SPADC) as a developing specialist of advanced plastic applications in the fields of automotive industry, electronic industry, construction materials, cables industry, packaging machinery pipes industry, medical supplies, tire production anpolymer.

Different topics were explained throughout the visit about polymer science, by Eng. Fayez, including polymer properties and usage in the plastic industry and kinds of plastic materials manufactured in the center. Eng. Abdulmalik Al-Sulaimi pointed out some plastic applications as: injection molding, blow molding (Plastic bottle engineering), extrusion (pipes - plastic bags - plastic sheets), textile production, construction, packaging, automobile and other products supported by the center. Eng. Al-Sulaimi stressed the importance of innovation in the field of plastic industry.

A field tour in the lab was arranged with detailed explanations by a group of engineers about the  stages of plastic industry. Eng. Fayez presented samples and forms of plastic applications such as: injection molding, blow molding (Plastic bottle engineering) , extrusion (pipes - plastic bags - plastic sheets), textile production (terrestrial textiles and ropes), and other products supported by the center .

After that, the delegation toured other laboratories in the center, which analyze and test a sample of the product after its manufacturing:

1- Mechanical testing lab: A lab equipped for measuring the strength of the product using instruments for testing tensile, compression and impact.

2- Thermal properties lab: A lab equipped with solubility coefficient tests and an impulse sealer.

3- Chemical properties lab: A lab equipped with viscosimeter, climate condition instrument and hydrometer.

4- Optical properties lab: A lab equipped with impurity tests and colorimeter.

Other devices: Gravimeter, dimensional metrology, and analytical balance devices.

Dr. Mervat Al-Zumaya', the vice head of the Department of Physics, has expressed her gratitude to the (SPADC) for the warm welcome; to Dr. Mohammad Babtain, dean of the college; and Dr. Ahmed Al-Qu'ood, head of the Department of Physics for supporting such important visits and contributing to the progressive development of our beloved homeland. In addition, she thanked Ms. Tarfah Al-'Inad, activity supervisor,  for her efforts in organizing and coordinating the visits.

The students expressed their happiness and gratitude to the College of Science and the Department of Physics, which provided them with the opportunity to visit SABIC Center and to explore its departments and objectives which is of great benefit in terms of broadening their scientific and professional prospects after graduation.

It is worth mentioning that the Department of Physics thanked Dr. Ra'id Al-Hathlool, vice dean of the college for development and quality, and his secretary, Mr. Khaled Al-Khar'an for their efforts in organizing this successful visit .
