Female Students from the Department of Physics Visit King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre

The Physics Department on the Female Campus organized a student scientific visit to King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre on Thursday, 01/26/1438 AH, corresponding to 10/27/2016 AD.

The visiting delegation included a group of outstanding students from the Department and was accompanied by two faculty members from the Department; Ms. Tarfah Al-Anad, Activity Supervisor of the Department, and Ms. Ahlam Al-Huwayti.

At the beginning of the visit, the delegation was briefed on Monitoring and Control Section (Cyclotron and pharmaceutical radioactive substances). Dr. Ahmad Al-Ghaith talked about quality control and nuclear accelerators, and that there were more than 40 radioactive material exported to other countries. He also addressed the topic of radiation leakage and how to deal with it.

In the Beta Cyclotron Section, Dr. Al-Ghaith talked about the production of beta rays and isotopes and methods for moving radioactive sources.

The students also visited the Radiochemistry Section (hot cells and laboratory of retrieving target material), where Dr. Barakat Al-Kinani gave a brief presentation on nuclear reactions and Thermochemistry Unit. He also talked about the methods of separating and purifying materials for medical uses, in addition to gamma rays used in diagnostic purposes.

Dr. Refaat Al-Mazrou introduced the Nuclear Medicine and Positron Beams Section for the students. The delegation also visited the Sterilization Unit– Gamma Rays, where Eng. Saad Al-Jamaan talked about the exposure to radioactive contamination and how to sterilize the contaminated product. In the Medical Biophysics and Functional and Molecular Imaging Section, Dr. Ahmad Al-Hawsawi talked about medical imaging, elaborating on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Mr. Farid Mihoub and Ms. Heba Al-Hamdan presented valuable information about the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory, and talked about detectors, radioactive doses, and methods of calibration devices.

In the Laboratory of Dosimetry Diagnostic in Medical Biophysics Mr. Ibrahim Al-Qayn talked about using detectors for diagnosing dosimetry.

The visit was concluded with the Radiation Physics Section – Radiation Therapy Planning, where both Dr. Shatha Al-Ramhi and Dr. Ghadeer Mater talked briefly about radiation therapy and how to develop a treatment plan for a patient with cancer.

At the end of the visit, Ms. Tarfah Al-Anad thanked the Research Centre and all its members for receiving the delegation of the Physics Department and giving the students the opportunity to learn about scientific and research fields in this scientific and research edifice. The focus was on the importance of this visit as it allowed students to discover many practical and professional aspects in which Physics graduates could work after graduation. The visit was also of a great importance in strengthening collaboration among the members of both institutions in the field of training and research and in conducting graduation projects.

This activity is part of the Physics Department activities, which aim to introduce the leading national institutions, contribute to the development and promotion of the academic level of students, and enhance their engagement and knowledge about their academic specialization. These activities also aim to open up broad prospects for students, whether scientific or practical, before or after graduation to prepare them to be distinctive individuals in order to build a constructive society in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The group of students who participated in this visit are: Ibtisam Dhaifallah Al-Anzi, Shadiah Al-Harbi, Nourah Abu Eid, Hadeel Al-Matrodi, Manar Al-Dakheel, Amjad Al-Oufi, Sarah Al-Ghamdi, Rawan Bani'mah, Maram Al-Amri, Mawahib Al-Dahhas, Ameerah Al-Sab'awi, Sarah Al-Nashmi, Alaa Al-Basheer, Hanadi Qarqour, Heyam Al Salem, Ghaida Al-Ruwaished, and Al-Jawharah Al-Qahtani.

The participating students expressed their happiness and gratitude for organizing this visit and commended the level of benefit attained and the great impact of the visit, which would reflect positively on their academic performance and develop their future perspectives after graduation.

It is noteworthy that the Physics Department thanked Dr. Raed Al-Hathlool, Vice-Dean of the College for Development and Quality, Ms. Mervat Al-Zumia, Deputy Head of the Department, and Mr. Khaled Al-Khar'an (Secretary of the Physics Department) for their concrete efforts in organizing and coordinating this successful visit.
