Final Academic Seminar in the Department of Physics for this Academic Year by Dr. Khalid Al-Zahrani

The Scientific Committee in the Physics Department organized the Final Academic Seminar of this academic year 1436/1437 AH, entitled "Advances in AFM for Biological Research."

Dr. Khalid Al-Zahrani, Assistant Professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at King Saud University, presented the Seminar on Tuesday, 07/26/1437 AH, corresponding to 05/03/2016 AD, at 11:00 am, for half an hour. It was followed by questions and discussion from the attendees.

Dr. Al-Zahrani started by giving an idea about the latest advancements in the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for biological research. After that, he broached the high-resolution three-dimensional imaging capabilities of the AFM that enable routine visualization of a wide range of biomolecules and nanoscale structures under physiological conditions. Faculty members and students of the Department were involved in the discussion regarding several points, including the practical side of how to use this technique in several areas.

This Seminar falls within a series of weekly seminars held by the Scientific Committee in the Physics Department and presented by faculty members in the Department and researchers from other research entities. They aim at motivating scientific research environment in the Department and informing its members of the latest advances in physical sciences in various fields.

It is noteworthy to mention that attending these seminars is open to all University members, including faculty and staff members and students.

Summary:

In this Seminar, the researcher discussed the latest advancements in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for biological research. The researcher gave examples concerning the high-resolution three-dimensional imaging capabilities of AFM that enable routine visualization of a wide range of biomolecules and nanoscale structures under physiological conditions. Measurements of interaction forces at a single molecule and biomechanical properties were discussed as well.

Biography of the Speaker:

Dr. Khalid Al-Zahrani - Assistant Professor of Bio-Nano Physics in the Physics and Astronomy Department and King Abdullah Institute of Nanotechnology at King Saud University, interested in the study of intermolecular interaction forces and the impact of diseases and drugs on mechanical properties and nanoscale structures at the cell surface and viruses. The researcher has published many papers and contributions in this field published in several scientific journals.
