The Scientific Committee in the Physics Department organized a scientific visit to King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), on Monday, 07/11/1437 AH, corresponding to 04/18/2016 AD. It lasted for two hours and consisted of visiting three national research centers in the City, and they were:
- The National Center for Applied Physics.
- The Nuclear Sciences Research Institute.
- The National Remote Sensing Technology Center.
It is worth mentioning that the visit consisted of a group of outstanding students. They were accompanied by Dr. Raed Al-Hathlool, Vice-Dean of the College for Development and Quality, and Mr. Turki Al-Toub, Teaching Assistant in the Department. Mr. Hussein Al-Shihri, who works in Public Relations in the City, coordinated the visit and accompanied the delegation during the tour.
Overview of the places they visited and the activities they did:
The National Center for Applied Physics:
It aims at contributing to the development of scientific research in physical science in the Kingdom, introducing the importance of physics to young people and trigger their interest in it by using an interesting way, and facilitating communication between scientific researchers in physical science departments
During the visit to the Center, several speakers from the Center presented the work and achievements of the Center, as well as the most important equipment in it. It is remarkable that most of the researchers who did the presentation are graduates of the Physics Department in Al Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, which had a significant positive impact on the students and encouraged and urged them to continue working on reaching their scientific goals and appropriate career opportunities.
The Nuclear Sciences Research Institute:
Dr. Turki Al-Khuraiji represented the institute in this visit and briefed the delegation on the following laboratories: Gamma-Ray Laboratories, Studying Chemical and Physical Properties of Materials Laboratory, Studying Mechanical Properties of Materials Laboratory, and Radiation Sterilization Laboratory.
The National Remote Sensing Technology Center:
It aims at receiving, providing, and distributing spatial information and conducting studies and applied research in the field of remote sensing to serve development in the Kingdom.
The Center's representative met students and coordinators and gave a detailed explanation of the scientific research and applied studies in the field of remote sensing. In addition, a demonstrative presentation was given on how to conduct and manage surveys and assessments of natural resources in the Kingdom, and treat environmental problems through the interpretation and analysis of satellite images and aerial photos by using optical analysis or digital analysis methods and extract information from them in order to serve the purposes of executed projects or beneficiaries. The information was provided during the meeting in the form of processed images, maps, reports, and statistical tables showing everything related to the use of images in natural resources studies.
At the end of the visit, Dr. Raed Hussein Al-Hathlool thanked KACST and its members for receiving the delegation of the Physics Department and giving students the opportunity to learn about the scientific and research fields in this research and scientific edifice. The focus was on the importance of this visit as it allowed students to discover many practical and professional aspects in which Physics graduates could work after graduation. The visit was also of great importance in strengthening collaboration in the field of training and research among the members of both institutions and conducting graduation projects.
This activity is part of the Scientific Committee's activities in the Physics Department, which aim to introduce leading national institutions, contribute to the development and promotion of the scientific level of students, and enhance their engagement and knowledge of their scientific specialization. These activities also aim to open up broad prospects for students, whether scientific or practical ones, before or after graduation to prepare them to be distinctive individuals in order to build a constructive society in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The group of students who participated in the visit are: Hamzah Abdulrahman Al-Asmari, Bilal Ahmad Al-Shumrani, Ali Sa`eed Al Kanad, Talal Faraj Al-Mutairi, Hasan Ahmad Jammah, and Khaled Ahmad Al-Arfaj.
The participating students expressed their happiness and gratitude for organizing this visit and gave credit to the level of benefit they gained and the great impact of the visit, which will reflect positively on their academic performance and develop their future prospects after graduation.
It is noteworthy that the Physics Department thanked both Dr. Raed Al-Hathlool and Mr. Abdullah Al-Funaisan, Secretary of the Vice-Deanship of the College for Development and Quality, for their concrete efforts in organizing and coordinating this successful visit. Extended thanks to Dr. Muhammad Marashdeh, Academic Advisor of the Department, for coordinating and organizing participating students affairs.
