       Executive summary

Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) "Life on Land" – Department of Economic and Social Affairs – is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development globally. It focuses on protecting terrestrial ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and sustainably managing natural resources to ensure the sustainability of land, forests, and wildlife for future generations. The importance of this goal arises amidst increasing environmental challenges such as land and forest degradation, loss of biodiversity, accelerated species extinction, and the impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems.
In line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, the Kingdom has given special attention to this goal by launching qualitative initiatives aimed at protecting vegetation cover, conserving wildlife, and sustainably investing in natural resources, thereby enhancing environmental security and economic and social development. In this context, Saudi universities, led by Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, play an active role in supporting this goal through education, scientific research, and community initiatives that focus on protecting terrestrial ecosystems, raising environmental awareness, and finding innovative solutions to challenges related to biodiversity and land, aligning with national efforts to protect life on land and achieve sustainable development.

Interconnection with Other Sustainable Development Goals

Goal 15 (Life on Land) is closely linked to other Sustainable Development Goals. Biodiversity and ecosystems form the basis for strategies to adapt to climate change and reduce disaster risks (Goal 13). Life on land and marine life (Goal 14) are interconnected, and ecosystems contribute to providing means to eradicate hunger (Goal 2) and poverty (Goal 1). Additionally, clean water (Goal 6) and clean energy (Goal 7) are essential for sustaining life on land.

Efforts of the Saudi Government to Achieve SDG 15:

Saudi Green Initiative (SGI):

The Saudi Green Initiative aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom and rehabilitate 40 million hectares of degraded land. Large-scale afforestation projects focus on increasing vegetation cover, reducing desertification, and restoring ecosystems.

Combating Desertification and Land Rehabilitation:

Programs are implemented to combat desertification through soil stabilization, sustainable grazing, and water conservation practices. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture oversees initiatives aimed at restoring degraded lands and preventing the expansion of desertification.

Biodiversity Protection:

The Kingdom has established protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries, such as the Farasan Islands and Royal Reserves, to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered species. The government has implemented breeding programs for native species, including the Arabian Oryx and Houbara Bustard, to prevent extinction.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices:

Modern irrigation systems and sustainable agricultural techniques help reduce water consumption and protect soil quality. Programs such as the National Afforestation Project integrate tree planting with agricultural development.

Forest Conservation:

Efforts to protect and restore local forests, including mangrove trees on the coasts, contribute to combating climate change and providing habitats for wildlife. Initiatives focus on reducing deforestation and promoting agroforestry.

Community  Participation:

Public awareness campaigns, such as "Let's Make It Green," encourage citizens to participate in tree planting and land protection. Volunteer programs engage communities in sustainable practices and environmental protection.

International Cooperation:

The Kingdom collaborates with global organizations, including the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), to address land degradation and biodiversity loss. Partnerships in climate action and ecosystem conservation enhance regional and global environmental efforts.
