Abstract: 

The classical moment problem can be stated as follows : Given a sequence of real numbers, when is there a measure on the real line with this sequence as moments . And if such a measure exists, is it unique. In this seminar we present the main results of the theory. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and unicity of solutions of the Hamburger and Stieljes moment problem. Also, the moment problem in probability theory is discussed. The normal distribution and the gamma distribution are determined by their moments.
