SDG 8 in Saudi Arabia: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) emphasizes promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Saudi Arabia, under Vision 2030, has made significant strides in achieving SDG 8 by diversifying its economy, modernizing labor laws, and fostering inclusive job creation across sectors.

Efforts by the Saudi Government to Achieve SDG 8

1.Economic Diversification Through Vision 2030:

      • The government's focus on reducing reliance on oil revenue is reshaping the economic landscape. Initiatives in tourism, entertainment, technology, and renewable energy aim to create new job opportunities and foster growth.
      • The Public Investment Fund (PIF) drives large-scale projects such as NEOM, the Red Sea Project, and Qiddiya, which contribute to job creation and economic development.

2.Labor Market Reforms:

      • Reforms in labor policies prioritize Saudization (known as Nitaqat), encouraging the hiring of Saudi nationals across private sectors.
      • Regulations have been introduced to ensure fair wages, improved working conditions, and equal opportunities for men and women.

3.Protecting Labor Rights:

      • Saudi Arabia has modernized its Labor Law to protect workers' rights, including regulations on working hours, health and safety standards, and anti-discrimination measures.
      • The Wage Protection System (WPS) ensures timely payment of salaries and transparency between employers and employees.

4.Women in the Workforce:

      • Gender equality in employment is a key focus, with reforms enabling women to enter previously restricted fields. The participation of women in the workforce has more than doubled in recent years.
      • Flexible working hours and remote work policies are introduced to facilitate a better work-life balance for women.

5.Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs):

      • The Monsha'at authority supports entrepreneurship and SMEs through funding, training, and business development services.
      • Access to loans and grants is provided to stimulate innovation and economic inclusion.

6.Youth Employment and Training:

      • Programs like Hadaf provide vocational training and career counseling to equip young Saudis with skills for the modern job market.
      • Initiatives in digital transformation and tech-based education prepare youth for high-demand sectors.

7.Sustainable Tourism and Green Economy:

      • The expansion of the tourism sector not only supports economic growth but also promotes sustainable development through eco-tourism projects and cultural heritage preservation.
      • Investments in renewable energy and the green economy are generating sustainable jobs while addressing climate challenges.
