The UNESCO Chair for Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue is a scientific chair that works within the system of research chair programs at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. It is based on a strategic vision for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia adopted by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. It is a vision that establishes a positive life approach that aims to establish coexistence. Peaceful among followers of religions and cultures.
The chair aims to conduct scientific research on issues related to dialogue between followers of religions and cultures, and to qualify distinguished scientific cadres who can participate effectively in the dialogue of cultures, contribute a positive role in bringing societies together, and spread the culture of dialogue by relying on a group of means, including: holding seminars and conferences. The dimension of dialogue with others, publishing research and studies that address issues of dialogue, and providing an opportunity for scholars and intellectuals through it to contribute to finding solutions to the problems that the world suffers from.
Dialogue based on equality, justice, and respect for religious and cultural privacy represents the ideal path for effective participation in building a safe and stable human civilization, as dialogue between followers of religions and cultures leads to building a global system free of cultural, military, and racist hegemonic tendencies, in which nations and peoples cooperate in peaceful coexistence and reject hostility and hatred. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has realized these facts and has repeatedly declared, through the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, its rejection of the idea of a clash between civilizations that has been frequently proposed recently, and called for the establishment of a true global dialogue in which each party respects the other party's sanctities, beliefs, and identity, because This is the best way for peaceful coexistence between nations and peoples. On June 4, 2008, the Kingdom launched an initiative to establish a global dialogue between followers of religions in order to work to protect humanity from its children's tampering with morals, families, and values. To achieve this goal, the World Islamic Conference for Dialogue was held in Mecca, in the presence of 500 scholars and thinkers from various countries of the world. Dialogue conferences continued with followers of religions and cultures, as a global conference for dialogue was held in Madrid during the period July 16-17, 2008, in the presence of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah, and the King of Spain, King Juan Carlos. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the declaration issued by the conference at the conclusion of its work, Which emphasized the rejection of theories of conflict between civilizations and cultures, warning against campaigns that seek to undermine the foundations of peace and stability in the world, promoting common human and moral values, and spreading a culture of respect and understanding through dialogue. In order to consolidate the international dimension of the Kingdom's initiative for dialogue, an interfaith dialogue summit was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on November 12-13, 2008, in the presence of King Abdullah and with the participation of a number of leaders from a number of countries around the world, along with a number of representatives of the heavenly religions. The conference concluded its work by issuing a declaration confirming the commitment to All countries should promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, including freedoms of belief and expression without discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, language or religion. The initiative of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques was praised by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, who said in the final statement of this summit: “ King Abdullah's initiative came at a time when we needed dialogue the most. It brought together people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet, and this initiative, along with other initiatives, will help build a more harmonious world."
Out of Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University's belief in its duty as a scientific research institution to support and enhance dialogue with others through studies and research, the establishment of a research chair within the university's research chairs program under the umbrella of UNESCO bears the name “UNESCO Chair for Dialogue among Followers of Religions and Cultures."
